Online Gambling - New Rules Taking Shape
BRUSSELS, Belgium (February 6, 2013) -- Extending the scope of the anti-money laundering directive - applicable for now only to bricks-and-mortar casinos - to all online gambling and betting activities is a key measure for stepping up the fight against fraud in this sector.
This is one of the priority actions announced by the European Commission in its communication of 23 October 2012 ('Towards a comprehensive European framework for online gambling', see Europolitics 4514). The other means of action proposed are also gradually taking shape through the expert group working in this area.

Governor Overestimates Return of Tax on Break Open Tickets
MONTPELIER, Vermont (February 5, 2013) -- Senators on the Finance Committee say Gov. Peter Shumlin's proposed tax on break open tickets - seen as boosting state revenue by $17 million - is not something they see as a dependable certainty.
A report recently issued by the Joint Fiscal Office estimates that a 10 percent excise tax on the lottery-like game would generate approximately $6.5 million worth of new state revenues in fiscal year 2014, far less than the $17 million the Shumlin administration has estimated.

Casino Workers Take Layoff Concerns to Lawmakers
